Nerja
A place where crystal-clear sea meets dramatic cliffs
Divine calm and endless space
Nerja has a special kind of charm — whitewashed houses, flower-covered balconies, cosy squares and cliffs rising above turquoise beaches. Walking along the Balcón de Europa feels like time slows down for a moment.
Mild winters and long, sunny summers make Nerja ideal for year-round living and an active outdoor lifestyle. Even in January, you can often sit outside with a coffee, watching the sea without needing a coat.
Cuisine scented with the sea
Local gastronomy is centred around fresh fish and simple traditional recipes. Beachfront chiringuitos serve grilled sardines, paella and pescado frito. In the town centre, you’ll find elegant restaurants, tapas bars and family-run eateries with a genuinely homemade feel. Nerja is also famous for its excellent ice cream and desserts — perfect companions for an evening stroll by the sea.
Sea, cliffs and mountains — all in one place
Nature lovers will be thrilled. The Sierra Almijara mountains rise above the town, offering impressive viewpoints and a variety of hiking routes. The coastline is dramatic, full of coves and rugged rock formations. And of course, there is the iconic Balcón de Europa, one of the most striking viewpoints in all of Andalusia.
History and underground treasures
Nerja’s greatest pride is the world-famous Cueva de Nerja — a vast cave complex featuring giant stalagmites, prehistoric paintings and large chambers that occasionally host concerts thanks to their remarkable acoustics. The town also has a charming old centre with white houses and churches that reflect different periods of Andalusian history.
